Genital (pubic) Care After an Episiotomy

Genital (pubic) Care After an Episiotomy

An episiotomy is a procedure performed during vaginal delivery to reduce the severity of lacerations caused by the fetal head emerging from the vaginal opening.

It is usually performed more frequently for primiparous women, but it may be necessary for women who have previously given birth vaginally, depending on the specifics of the case and the doctor's assessment.

Since the wound is in a relatively unclean area, it is susceptible to infection and must be carefully cared for to avoid complications.

How should stitches be cared for after an episiotomy?

• Keep the area clean by washing it multiple times with soap and water.

• Keep the area dry and ventilated regularly to avoid excessive sweating.

• Take warm baths, avoiding adding any chemicals to the warm water.

• Adhere to the pain relievers prescribed by your doctor.

• Adhere to the prescribed antibiotics to prevent wound infection.

• Avoid constipation by eating high-fiber foods and drinking plenty of water. Laxatives may be used.

• See a doctor immediately if you notice any of the following signs: foul-smelling discharge, fever, chills, redness in the area, bleeding from the stitches, or wound separation.

• Avoid heavy lifting or sexual intercourse throughout the recovery period.

How long does it take for episiotomy stitches to heal?

It takes between 14 and 30 days and is usually fully healed by the end of the postpartum period.
